Founding Families Decry Atlantic Beach Council's Bickering, Meeting Collapse

In an article by Robert Morris, published on Wednesday, June 4, 2008, The Sun News reported that the Atlantic Beach Town Council's Monday night meeting had broken down due to a procedural stand-off. Property owners and residents reacted to the breakdown with sharp criticism toward the council, calling their ineffectiveness a disrespect to the citizens who comprised the audience at the meeting. Some also questioned the town's future viability.

The standoff resulted when council member Retha Pierce, backed by Donnell Thompson, attempted to add to the meeting agenda an item regarding replacement of interim Town Manager Charles Williams, appointed in March in the wake of indictments and suspensions involving the former town manager and mayor. Council members Jake Evans and Mayor Pro Tem Charlene Taylor, voted against the adding the agenda item, creating a 2-2 tie, after which the meeting broke down altogether.
