Ruby Cecil Jones, age 100, of 1649 North Main Street, Danville, Virginia, died at her residence on Sunday, December 28, 2014. Born in Pittsylvania County on April 29, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Robert Jones and Cora Yeatts Jones.
She lived most of her life in the Danville and Alexandria areas. She taught school at Chatham, Bellevue, and George Washington schools. In 1953 she received a Ford Fellowship. In Alexandria she was a guidance counselor at Hammond High School and T. C. Williams High School. She was educated in Danville Public Schools and Averett College. She received her B. A. Degree from the College of William and Mary, where she majored in History and Government. She went on to receive her Masters of Education Degree from the college of William and Mary where she majored in Guidance and Counseling.
She was very active in the community. She served as past president of the Danville Education Association; past president of Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa; past president of the Book and Art Club; was a member of the Gamma Society and the Wednesday Club. She traveled extensively in this country and abroad.
Ms. Jones is survived by two nieces and eight nephews along with many, many friends; including her caregivers, India Bennett, Sunny Andrews, Brenda Winn, Priscilla Walker and Suzanne Woicikowfski. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Russell and Ray Jones; a sister, Zelma Jones Gilbert; one niece and one nephew.
Funeral services for Ms. Jones will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2014, at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Myron Bruce officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at Barker Funeral Home Chapel from 12 noon until 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2014, prior to the service. At other times they will be at the residence on North Main Street, Danville. Barker Funeral Home is respectfully serving the Jones family.
