Lorenza Dow Helvey and his wife Sarah Ann Elizabeth Miller Helvey are pictured with their children in this photograph taken around 1892 at the front of their home on Kimberling Creek, Bland County, Virginia. At left is Lafayette (“Fayette”). Standing at the back are Dora Bell and John Watson. Bessie May is leaning on her mother's lap.
The photograph is from the collection of Mary Helvey Mitchell, daughter of John Watson Helvey. In 1983 Mary completed a painting of the Dow Helvey farm, showing it as it appeared after the construction of the Helveys' new home in 1895.
