First Melton Grant Presented

The Pittsylvania Historical Society and the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region are proud to announce that the first Herman and Helen Melton grant of $750 will be awarded to Mary Leigh Boisseau of Danville. She will use the monies to assist in the completion of the second phase of the Camden Parish Vestry records translation and indexing. Camden Parish is the forerunner of Chatham's Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Main Street. She has already completed Phase I, organizing the records from 1767 to 1820. The second phase will cover from 1820 to 1850. Camden Parish was recognized by the state as responsible for care of orphans and the poor.

Pictured (L to R) are Pittsylvania County Clerk of Court H. F. Haymore, Jr., Mrs. Boisseau, Glenn Giles, representing the Pittsylvania Historical Society, and Debra Dodson, executive director of the Community Foundation. Mrs. Boisseau will present the program at the Oct. 17, 2005 Historical Society meeting and will speak about the contents of these records. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the 1813 Clerk's Office in Chatham.
